Why I started the Magickal Learning Lab

Hello, and welcome to the blog! I'm Jacqueline Wilson. Some of you know me as the lady who makes robes, banners and regalia here at Magic Tool Box UK. I'm also a ceremonial magician of nearly 30 years, a member of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn and a Master Mason in Modern Mixed Masonry.

Lots of you have asked me what the Magickal Learning Lab actually is, and why I started it. So pop the kettle on, and I'll tell you.

Where it all began

Magic Tool Box UK began in 2017, when I made a robe for an Order in London. Since then I've made tools and regalia, each one by hand and to order, for magicians of just about every path.

I was first introduced to Magick by my husband around 28 years ago now, but I’ve always known there was something else and always felt different, like I was just in a film looking out as if everyone else wasn’t real (if that makes sense).

Over the years, one thing kept coming back to me. All the Magickal traditions seemed to keep themselves to themselves, and unless you joined that particular group, then there was no information about it. That’s where the Monthly Mystical Live started. I also thought, why shouldn’t we all learn from different practices and methods in our own homes, without having to join expensive groups? I wanted people to get as much information, help and support that I could give.

Bringing community to Magick

My mission has always been simple: to bring community to Magick and unite magicians in harmony. The Lab is the heart of that.

It's my online members' group, right here on the website, for ceremonial magicians of every tradition: Golden Dawn, Rosicrucian, Martinist, Masonic, Abramelin, Solomonic and beyond. Perhaps you work in a temple or lodge, or perhaps you practise alone. Either way, you're welcome. We're here to learn from each other, not to compete. There is far too much ego going around with some groups, and I just want everyone to be harmonised together and learn from each other.

A new ritual every month

Each month I film a new ritual and share it with members as a private video. You can watch it, learn it and come back to it whenever you like.

October's ritual is the Rose Cross Ritual, a Golden Dawn classic. You trace the sign of the Rose Cross around your space, and it has long been worked for protection, peace and calm. It's a lovely way to settle before meditation, too. Because it's a recording, you can still watch it if you join now. The Rose Cross Ritual is a beautiful ritual, and for me it’s a must almost every day.

Lab Experiments: doing, not just reading

Alongside each ritual there's a Lab Experiment. This month's is "Seven days with the Rose Cross". Work the ritual once a day for seven days and keep a short journal: the time of day, how you felt before, anything you noticed, and how you felt afterwards. Then share your results with everyone in the Lab feed.

And if life gets in the way? Missed a day? Begin again. Steady practice matters far more than perfect practice. Ground yourself afterwards (water, food, feet on the floor) and keep a few honest notes. Over a week, those notes start to show you patterns you'd never spot otherwise.

More than 100 lessons waiting for you

The Lab also has a library of more than 100 lessons, covering Tarot, astrology, the Tree of Life, talismans, the LBRP, meditation and more. Members' favourites tend to be the practical ones, like Consecrating an Oil, Crafting a Talisman and the Vernal Equinox Ritual.

If you'd like a taste first, my Monthly Mystical Live talks are free on YouTube at 7pm UK time, with guests from across the esoteric world. You'll find us at @magictoolboxuk660.

Learning by living it

I believe in steady, shared practice because I've lived it. My book, The Abramelin Effect, is the magical diary of our family's 6-month Abramelin operation, along with a working process to help the next magician who takes it on. Doing the Abramelin taught me that regular meditation, prayer and ritual really does pay off and not to expect things to happen exactly how you imagined it would. The universe has to find the easiest route for your success, but if you put in the effort and do the Magick correctly and with pure intention, then it really does work.

Come and join us

If any of this speaks to you, I'd love you to join us. The Magickal Learning Lab is just £3 a month, less than a cup of coffee. For that you get a new ritual every month, the full lesson library, our Lab Experiments and a friendly circle to practise alongside. It's for adults 18+, and open to magicians anywhere in the world.

And while you're here, do have a wander round the shop for handmade tools and regalia, or pick up a copy of The Abramelin Effect for £8.

Love & Light, Jacqueline
