Magical Tools Part 1 - Golden Dawn Regalia

ree

Here is a series on some of the Magical Tools that we make and some history about the amazing tools that are used in magick.

I will start with the basics in a Golden Dawn Temple. The items that an initiate would acquire to start their journey in a Golden Dawn Temple. You would require a nemyss, black tau robe and a sash. You might be thinking (or not) that these items aren't magical tools but they are, and they are the most important items you would possess.

Let's start with the Nemyss.

The nemyss or Egyptian headdress is partly based on the Ankh symbolically meaning eternal life. Ancient Egyptians would wear such a headdress to signify the striving for eternal life. An initiate would encounter all sorts of dangers, phisically as well as visualized so they would hold the Ankh high above their head to ward off the dark powers that beheld them. Also, if you consider the hebrew letter Qoph meaning back of the head, this would have been considered as covering the supernal Sephiroth for power and protection from any outside influences and those of a subconscious nature through the back of the head.

This leads me on nicely to the Tau Robe.

Wearing both of these items together, a Golden Dawn member would be considered a living symbol of the Ankh. The name Tau which is the hebrew letter Tau and the robe is referred to the Tau Cross which looks like the letter T. When the black robe is worn by the initiate of a Golden Dawn temple, it sybolises them in a state of darkness and as they go threw the grades they are symbolically rising through the darkness towards the light. These are also linked to the Ankh and I will be describing that on the next post. Thank you for reading and I hope that you will enjoy reading more.

Love and light

Jacqueline

In the same manner that the Hermetic Cross can be collapse to represent a Cube, so too can the Ank be collapsed to represent a head wearing a nemyss - arms on either side of the head, with the tail at the back of the head. Food for thought. Josef
